Interior design TIPS: how to design a small bathroom ✨

  1. Layout

Key to maximise space for a successful bathroom. Time spent on this step is a must. Get this wrong, and it’s the undoing of a well-designed bathroom. Think about what’s really important to you and your family. Do you use a bath often? What available storage do you have? Is there natural light?

  2. LIGHT & BRIGHT

Light colours and good lighting help a small bathroom feel bigger. Light doesn’t mean it has to be white. Think soft muted tones of blue or dusky pink. Whites and greys never go out of fashion and are easy to accessorise with colour. Do you have a window? What additional lighting do you need - led or side sconces are great for task lighting.

  3. MIRROR

Reflect light to create the illusion of space. They help lighten a room, can create interest by giving a different view, and these days there are so many interesting shapes and designs.

  4. WALL HUNG VANITY

A clear floor helps to open up the space. By having a void / negative space beneath the vanity you create an illusion of space. Wall hung vanities come in many sizes and heights, some closer to the ground than others. The only thing to consider when weighing up this option vs a floor standing vanity is that you do lose some storage space. So, consider what’s most important, and if you can create additional space elsewhere if needed.

  5. WALL MOUNTED TAPS

Look stylish and saves space on your vanity benchtop, meaning you have space for some pretty aesthetically pleasing things like a plant, pretty perfume bottle or simple keep it completely free and uncluttered. It also makes the benchtop super easy to clean.

  6. MIRRORED CABINETS

Multi purpose - functional, storage & light reflecting. I’m a huge fan of these for storage in small bathrooms. Hide all your medicines, bottles etc out of sight, meaning no clutter on view and you keep a lovely calm and relaxing space. There are more shapes available these days - square, rectangle, round, arched etc.

  7. NICHE

Recessed into wall, perfect for small bathroom spaces. These are an absolute winner for small bathrooms. You just need to ensure you put this in the plan early so your builder can plan this into the framing. Go as big as you can - width and height, and make sure you measure your frequently used tallest bottle to ensure it will fit. These can be small or they look great the full length of a wall.

  8. LEDGE

Provides additional bathroom storage, but takes a little more space. I love a ledge and if you have space, I would definitely plan one of these into your design. As they aren’t recessed, they will take a bit of your rooms space, but if you can make it work, do!

  9. LARGE FORMAT TILES

Gives the feeling of space and can be budget friendly. With less detail and grout lines, they draw the eyes more over the space as a whole making it feel bigger. With less fuss and work, not only can they be cheaper per m2 it also means less work for the tiler, meaning less $$$.

  10. GLASS SHOWERS

Frameless glass screens keep the space feeling open and light. Whether it’s a partial fixed screen, or shower unit with door, frameless glass is the way to go. Not only does it feel more open, it’s so much easier to clean. Win win!
